A radio show exploring the women in/as/of material culture. As the category of women is a social construction, a dialectical tension between subjecthood and objecthood, I thematised the show into material qualities. I chose the name because pulp is something that has a form which oozes. It speaks to a congealed accumulation made from multiple materialities, sitting between the liquid, the solid, the granular and the whole. But of course the Jarvis Cocker connection is not lost on me as some sort of definitive icon of “sex as a kind of class revenge”. He named his band ‘after a tradable commodity he learned about in an economics class’, which sits in pretty perfect alignment.
For each episode/quality, the structure of the show followed a loose arc. Beginning with that which enforced and enclosed the idea of womanhood, moving through associations and etymologies used and shaped by women, before moving to the reclamation and disruption of each quality by and for women and those resisting matrial, cultural conformity.

On Sunday 17 May 2020, MayDay Radio hosted an audio brunch. It was towards the end of the first phase of lockdown. Those in attendance made food at around 11am and recorded themselves cooking and eating. There was a recipe and instruction guide provided. There was no virtual interaction, no screens or zoom. All the guests cooked and ate separately but in the knowledge that others were doing the same. Some people spoke, others just cooked, catching the sounds around them on various devises. At the table, guests were ask to speak to a number of questions: What’s your favourite brunch memory? What has fomo meant to you in lockdown? Have you ever had a bottomless brunch? The sounds and conversations were then mixed together after the event to provide a snapshot on this very specific day towards the start of the pandemic.

A last minute, one-off show between friends, exploring the ways in which we edge abandon, featuring a range of live and recorded contributions, from readings and poems to dedications and confessions. The call-out reads:’We want to hear you on the pleasure of longing, the chaos of leaving, the chasm of parting; a sticky, peely, crusty one for us all. We tred through wist and wallow to poke the tender nerves that hurt so much but all the same feel compulsively satisfying.
Open to anything relevant, but one prompt might be - what’s the best or worst thing you've done to either wallow or eschew (feelings/experiences of) abandonment. Both silliness and seriousness allowed - overthinking inevitable.’
